Other Past Work Experience:

Project Manager for Leidos – Antarctic Support Contract    2017 to 2021

In charge of long-range planning for all three U.S. Antarctic Stations; South Pole, McMurdo and Palmer.  The planning includes facilities construction for science along with logistics, housing, medical, recreational, power-plant & fuel storage.

Director of Engineering for Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA) 1991 to 2000

Responsible for the planning, designing and construction of a National Astrophysical Observatory at the South Pole. CARA had a ten-year contract from the National Science Foundation to install a world class observatory at the South Pole. Managed an international team of scientists and engineers working on the design and construction of this observatory.

Supervisor, Engineering Services for Antarctic Support Associates (ASA)                     1990 to 1991

In charge of a 20-person engineering and clerical team supporting the United States, National Science Foundation’s, Antarctica Program. Duties included the design of new facilities, engineering and maintenance of existing facilities, surveying and construction support. The design and facilities management were for all three United States, Antarctica stations; McMurdo, Palmer and the Amundsen/Scott South Pole Station. Deployed to McMurdo Station, Antarctica for four months and visited the Dry Valleys, Marble Point, Mount Lister and Mount Erebus. Also deployed to South Pole from McMurdo for two weeks.

While at McMurdo I was chosen to develop and lead an international search and rescue team consisting of Kiwis, US Naval support members and ASA employees. I have deployed to the South Pole, Antarctica 14 times, the trip durations averaging two months.  Awarded the Antarctic Service Medal established by the United States Congress.

 

 

Public speaker:

Experience speaking to large groups on science, history and polar regions.

Wilderness Trip Leadership:

Organized and led raft trips down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon twice, The Yampa and Green Rivers in Dinosaur Park, the Middle Fork of the Salmon and the Selway River in Idaho and many other trips.

Organized and led overnight sea kayaking trips in Abel Tasman, New Zealand and Kauai, Hawaii.

Organized and led multi-day horseback hunting trips in the Colorado mountains,   Mule Guide Grand Canyon and Horse Wrangler – Grand Tetons.

Mountaineering and Rescue:

Climbed all 54 of the Colorado peaks above 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) in elevation.

Extensive ice and rock-climbing experience along with cross-county-skiing, mountaineering-skiing, downhill-skiing and snow shoeing.

Member of Search and Rescue teams in Garfield and El Paso Counties in Colorado. Team leader for the Scott/McMurdo joint Antarctic Search & Rescue team.

First Aid:  Current Wilderness First Responder. Past Emergency Medical Technician.

Pilot:  Commercial Airplane License with: Instrument, Single Engine, Multi-engine & Seaplane
