Activities

Children's Program:
"I'm bored" is a phrase you don't hear from children at Latigo Ranch. Structured activities throughout the day keep youngsters occupied and entertained. While parents are on their trail rides, children are supervised in fun, educational activities. Our intent at Latigo is to give you flexibility and freedom. For some activities, parents want to be with their children; at other times they would like to be able to do things separately. The children's program is not mandatory. A family can do everything together, but we have found that most children prefer to be with their peers and counselor whenever possible. We encourage children to participate in all of the week's activities - trail rides, square-dancing, nature walks, swimming, fishing, hayrides, etc. They may eat meals with their family, or they may eat at a separate table with their peers and counselors. For some meals the children will eat independently of the adults outdoors on wiener rosts. Incidentally, at Latigo there are no video games to distract children from the other activities. 8-13 YEAR-OLDS: Children in this age group will spend a great deal of time riding. We emphasize instruction, and we structure fun riding activities with sufficient challenge to ensure that these young riders are improving their riding skills while having a good time. Of course, all of this is done with safety in mind. The counselors are trained in horsemanship and demonstrate commitment to helping children learn as they enjoy their vacation. 6-7 YEAR-OLDS: Riding a horse demands concentration. Children six to seven years old have more limited attention spans than older children and need special attention as they learn to ride. These children will ride as frequently as the older ones, but on rides of slightly shorter duration. To deal with the special needs of this age group, the counselors ride with them separately from the older children. In addition to the activities that the older children engage in, these children will spend more time with their counselors in other activities like swimming, fishing, hiking and educational games. 3-5 YEAR-OLDS: The combination of ranch and mountains stimulates inquiring young minds. We at Latigo want to help youngsters seize the opportunity to learn about this unique environment. Children under six years of age are supervised during those hours that the adults are riding. While here they will learn about mountain animals, plants and rocks. They will hear stories about Indians and horses. They will create crafts in the Sheriff's Office and the tipi, go on nature walks with their counselor, be led around on a horse, play stick-toss with the dogs, feed the ranch pets like Charcoal and Smokey the rabbits and Wilbur the pig, or learn educational games and songs. INFANTS (TWO YEARS AND UNDER): Please talk with us in advance to arrange baby-sitting services for infants. Cribs are available for infants, and there is no charge for infants who stay in the room with the parents.

Other Seasons

Winter:
You'll experience the warm hospitality and fun winter activities at Latigo Ranch that keep our guests coming back year after year, and for some, several times each winter.

The outdoor activities are as invigorating as the inside comforts are cozy. Experienced Colorado skiers know this is where you find some of Colorado's best snow conditions - for us, about 18 feet of it falls every year!

You will discover why Latigo Ranch guests who have skied all over the state, proclaim that Latigo Ranch offers some of the finest cross-country skiing available in Colorado. We machine groom 60 km of trail, covering varied terrain from flat beginning track to challenging advanced. All of our cross country ski track is groomed for both classic and skate skiing.

For backcountry or telemark aficionados, we are surrounded by over 200 square miles of deep powder in the National Forest. Click HERE to see our XC Trail map!

You will enjoy the quiet and seclusion of a place that is on a peninsula of private land nestled into the National Forest. Some Nordic centers are right off of the highway or in town where traffic noise is a distraction. We think it is worth the extra miles to enjoy a place where our nearest neighbor is over 5 miles away.

You will savor the quality and variety of food about which our guests rave. Nouveau Ranch Cuisine: healthy, hearty, tasty, fresh, and wholesome.

You will meet new folks who, like you, enjoy the adventure of life. Swap lots of good talk, stories, and laughter.

Snowshoeing has become increasingly popular over the last few years and many of our guests enjoy it as much or more than the cross country skiing. The trails are great for beginner and advanced snowshoeing enthusiasts.

To enhance your guest experience, skiing and other recreational activities are often conducted on part of thousands of acres under special use permit to Latigo in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest.
