Ten Ways to Burn Calories While Having Fun at Colorado's Dude and Guest Ranches This Summer

Outdoor Activities and Adventures for 'Kids' of All Ages

Shawnee, Colo. (May 19, 2009) - Grab your gear and get ready for some outdoor fun and adventure this summer at one of Colorado's dude & guest ranches. The Colorado dude ranch experience is unlike any other - there may be chuck wagon cookouts, gourmet food, campfire singing, and ghost stories, but it's the outdoor fun that brings guests back year after year.  You get to decide how adventurous you want to be at any of the 30 member ranches located across the state.

Since most activities are included in the weekly rate, you can create your own adventure itinerary.  Here are ten ways to get out and burn some calories.

  1. Cattle Drives: Gather and herd cattle from one pasture to another to prevent over-grazing and preserve the land. Cattle drives are seasonal and can involve pushing livestock up into federally-leased land in the Colorado's High Country or, in the fall, bringing them back to deeded ranch land. Check with individual ranches for details.
  2. Fishing: Colorado dude and guest ranches offer fishing for all abilities. Many guests enjoy wetting a line along stretches of private or leased Gold Medal river and exploring secluded ponds with their family. Most ranches stock their own ponds or are near local streams and lakes where the ranch staff can advise guests on the hotspots where they are most likely to find fish, and many can outfit them with the latest gear or put them in touch with a seasoned outfitter for instruction and guided trips.
  3. Gymkhana Games: Let the competition begin! Gymkhanas, known as games on horseback are fun, timed events that involve a starting point, a finish line and some sort of "obstacle" to get through. It's a fun time for the participants, audience and the horses!
  4. Hiking: There are many ways to explore the wilderness and hiking happens to be one of Colorado's most popular pastimes. There are dozens of trails to explore on foot as well as on horseback. Most ranches offer guided hikes or nature walks with guides knowledgeable about local history and the ranch's plants, birds, and wildlife. Some ranches even offer alpine treks up nearby peaks (you can climb most of Colorado's highest mountains without technical climbing gear).
  5. Horseback Riding: There is nothing more relaxing and fun than letting a well-trained horse take you into the Colorado high country. But trail riding is just one way to enjoy horses at Colorado ranches. Additional horseback activities are offered at many of ranches including cattle roundups, team penning, horseback overnight pack trips, and family rodeos.
  6. Mountain Biking: Many ranches have loaner bikes or can arrange a rental with a local bike shop. Not only is it great exercise, it's another great way to see wildlife and spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery.
  7. River Rafting: Float a class-one river with a fly rod or paddle through class-five whitewater. Most ranches offer a time in the week for rafting. The ranches contract with the best, most reputable outfitters around and an excursion is sometimes covered in ranch rates or discounted.
  8. Rock Climbing: Some of Colorado's dude and guest ranches offer rock climbing adventures where you can spend a few hours learning the basics of climbing and rappelling. Guides are able to challenge strong climbers while teaching newcomers.
  9. Square Dancing: Get out your boots for a little square dancing! All ranches host evening entertainment which includes barn dances where you can dance the night away.
  10. Swimming: For those who live where the summer heat index climbs above 100, nothing sounds better than escaping to the cool high-country of Colorado. Most ranches have heated swimming pools. Others offer heat relief via natural ponds, streams, and water decks.

Other Winter Activities

Although many ranches are open for only part of the year, a handful of Colorado ranches remain open during the winter season. During the winter, guests can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities many of which include a guide and equipment such as scenic backcountry ski tours, snowshoe adventures, mild naturalist tours, cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, ice skating, tubing, sledding, horseback riding, swimming, fly-fishing, and more. Off-ranch activities such as snowmobiling, dog-sledding and downhill skiing can also be arranged.

Family Fun and Adventure at Colorado's Dude and Guest Ranches

Outdoor Adventure, Cookouts and "Edutaining" Activities for the Kids

Shawnee, Colo. (April 28, 2009) - Colorado's dude & guest ranches provide the perfect getaway for a family vacation.  You'll find something for everyone in the family with this mini-destination experience.  The 30 certified ranches offer everything from riding, river rafting, fishing, hiking, tennis and mountain biking to crafts and photo workshops, swimming, hay rides and much more. Many even offer treats such as massages to soothe muscles unaccustomed to having so much fun. And the best part is these activities are included in the quoted daily rate.  You pick how you want to spend the week.

Guided horseback rides, llama pack trips, overnight pack trips, chuckwagon cookouts and campfire cuisine are among the various Western experiences available to guests. A dude ranch pack trip doesn't mean roughing it. Plenty of delicious (and often gourmet) hot food is served and dry and comfy tents with warm bedding provided. Overnight trips mean campfire singing, ghost stories, hot chocolate and original campfire treats, which the kids really enjoy!

In addition, all the ranches offer extensive and "edutaining" children's programs.  Both educational and entertaining, the programs feature Old West activities from horseback riding and gold panning, to campfire building and archery.  The kids can enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and more.  Family rides allow everyone to saddle up together, while Kids' game night gives parents some pampered time alone at a candle light adults-only dinner in the dining room.  All children are matched up with others their own age and are led by trained, qualified counselors.

Here's what your week at the ranch might look like:

  • Typically, most ranches begin the week with a welcome campfire or staff introduction and they make sure guests are comfortable in their accommodations.
  • The second day begins with horse orientation and training. You can ride as much or as little as you like.  Experienced wranglers match guests to the perfect horse and make sure they ride trails equal to their ability and desire.
  • Each day guests are offered different types of rides: short, 2-hour rides, half-day rides, full-day rides, etc. Often, the various rides will meet up in the mountains for a trailside breakfast or brunch. After eating, everyone enjoys the rest of the day according to their individual desire. Most ranches also offer guests the opportunity to participate in an overnight pack trip in the backcountry.
  • The rest of the week is generally organized so that guests can go river rafting one day, take an excursion to a nearby National Park or historical site on another day, etc.  Guests get to decide how they want to spend each day - some like to ride in the morning, fish in the afternoon, and read by the fire or play board games in the evening.
  • The week culminates with a send off dinner, barn dance or cookout, and other activities.

Dude Ranches – The Original “Green” Vacation

February 10, Shawnee, CO – Member ranches of the Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch Association have been offering family vacations that follow “green practices” far longer than recent trends. Colorado dude ranches have been “green” for, oh, about 70 years now.

There is nothing greener than riding a good horse on a well-maintained natural trail through untouched mountain splendor on a spectacular summer day under pollution-free deep blue Colorado skies.

Our ranches have been monitoring pasture use, managing stream banks to insure clean water, and introducing folks to “leave no trace” recreational practices for decades. Ensuring that you have a wonderful, safe, and fun time in the great Rocky Mountains begins with taking care of the land, wildlife, and water resources that make each dude ranch a spectacular vacation location. Many of our ranches have been passed down through several generations. This means that their commitment to sustainable land stewardship is not a passing fancy or a recent “jump on the bandwagon” kind of devotion to green practices.

What this means is that you will not only have a great time riding, hiking, fishing, or river rafting at a Colorado dude and guest ranch, but that you are also playing a vital role in protecting valuable habitat and open space for your children and grandchildren. Of course our ranchers are experienced at making sure that you will eat the most nutritious and often locally grown foods available. OK, the never-empty cookie jar in the lodge is an exception – after all this a vacation. Our ranchers’ commitment to the environment never gets in the way of your fun or the way they pamper your every need.

The Rocky Mountains are waiting to blow their good tidings into your life and Colorado’s dude ranchers are waiting with supper on the table, a fire in the hearth, and all the renewal and relaxation you need. Your horse is waiting to take you back to what is most important in life. To obtain a free Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch vacation guide and DVD visit www.duderanching.info.
